Nathan Dicks – Rewise Learning Ltd

My first taste of starting my own business was when I set up MU promotions at the age of 19. I run MU promotions, a successful DJ/music promotion and events management organization up until 2008, before setting up Rewise Learning Ltd and its associated Learn-Thru-Music and Sing-In-Success brands.

Highlights include working with over 2000 young people in the last three years via our LearnThruMusic Courses, Distributing our LearnThruMusic learning resource’s to over 20,000 secondary school students and running corporate training courses for multinational companies such as Legal and General and Admiral.

Other notable highlights include having the concept backed in public by the then Prime Minister, the Education Minister for Wales and Prince Charles and having feature length articles written about Learn-Thru-Music learning resources in national publications such as The Times, The TES, The Daily Mail etc. and featuring on the BBC.

Plans for the future, my number one priority is to stay happy and to keep smiling.

Emily Webb – Oarsome Potential Ltd

Founder of Oarsome Potential ltd, Emily Webb has designed and brought to market an innovative ergonomic handgrip. Providing multiple and differing benefits depending on their application. The main benefit across all applications is that the Oarsome Potential Grips help to prevent blistering and soreness on the hands.

Originally designed for use by professional and amateur rowers on rowing oars the grips are now also used on indoor rowing machines; and by ocean rowers who row around 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean with virtually blister free hands! The prevention blisters when rowing can help retain new comers in the sport, which will be particularly important with the Olympics legacy of London 2012. The grips are also used by Paralympic athletes during their training leading up to London 2012 and will be undergoing trials this year with one of the biggest oar manufactures in the world.

The Oarsome Potential grips have also earned a solid reputation for use on crutches in the medical industry, which continues to grow. Praised by Physiotherapists for short and long term users and provided by several Military hospitals to our wounded service people. Many customers have described the experience of using the grips on their crutches as life changing.

Emily appeared on BBC2’s Dragons Den in 2009 and was the youngest person to present their business in the Den without an aide. Emily will be a Young Enterprise Ambassador for academic year 2012 – 2013, which very apt as she designed her product during her time studying for her GSCE design and technology project.

Mud Trek Mountain Bike Breaks

MudTrek Mountain Bike Breaks:  Think of a ski chalet… for mountain bikers… in Wales!  Based at 1000 feet with breath taking views near Brechfa, Carmarthenshire (home of the world class Brechfa mountain bike trails) www.mudtrek.com began in August 2011 and offers the unique all inclusive package of:

  •         Awesome riding
  •         FREE “off piste” guiding (a chance to ride Wales’ amazing natural single track in the safe    hands of a qualified mountain bike leader)
  •         Transportation of guests & bikes to the guide sites and/or riding from the door
  •         Great, exclusive accommodation in a fabulous location
  •         Fabulous food (hearty breakfasts, packed lunches and delicious dinners)
  •         Optional full suspension bike hire

MudTrek is the brainchild of Nikki Channon & Jason Mulvey, a husband & wife team who moved to the area to create a business that encompassed their passions: mountain biking and hospitality. Extensive research showed that mountain biking is one of the fastest growing sports today and Wales offers some of the best riding there is.  As keen skiers they have been on a number of fully catered chalet holidays over the years and felt sure this concept could be adapted to suit mountain bikers in the UK and Wales was there chosen location.

Nikki & Jason converted one large, long barn into 2 self-contained properties which can open up as 1 large property if required, offering maximum flexibility to smaller or larger groups (2–16 guests).  The expense of the renovations meant there was no budget left for marketing so they ran a competition through Facebook, Twitter and MBR (Mountain Bike Rider) magazine which gave them the “no cost” exposure needed to kick start the business.  Social media continued the momentum and then a mention in The Sunday Time Travel Planner and a full-page review in The Guardian was all that was required to ensure that they have been almost 100% fully booked since opening.  They were delighted to become Gold Winners of Carmarthenshire Tourist Associations “Most Exciting New Business” award in November.

The Kindercafe

My name is Alyson Pugh and I am the owner of the Kindercafe, Swansea’s only 100% child friendly cafe, party and playtime venue based in the heart of the city centre As an NHS professional with more than 25 years experience, it has always been my dream to open a totally child friendly café where parents can bring their babies and young children, to relax and enjoy a meal, snack or drink without other customers ‘tutting’.   The focus is on making a trip to the City Centre a pleasure rather than a trauma by providing a safe and hassle free environment for both parents and children.

It’s a fantastic endorsement of my new business to be shortlisted for the South Wales Business Awards, which are the first awards I’ve ever entered!

Not only has Hannah had to overcome trying to learn to run a business, but is also a mum to a two and half year old and is near completing her MBA at Glamorgan university. MHM Plant is now in the process of setting up in Australia and has already successfully sold equipment and exported machines out there, this is just the pilot and we aim to roll out into other countries.

Anna Denton-Jones – Morgan Denton Jones Ltd

Anna Denton-Jones is nominated in the category Female Entrepreneur of the year. Anna was one of the founding partners of Morgan Denton Jones Limited, set up with two colleagues in 2007. She knew that Wales had a gap in the market for a dedicated employment law and training practice, which would offer the same high quality advice you could expect from a much larger firm, but that it could be structured to enable that service to be provided at a lower price tag than competitors. More importantly she felt that often SME businesses sometimes got made to feel inferior when dealing with large firms and that they didn’t always get the attention they deserved. Now Anna is able to understand the issues facing her clients because she runs a small business herself.

Anna was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in September 2005 and happily shares this information with others as she feels strongly that the images that get portrayed in the news of disabled people within the workplace are misleading, especially when it comes to disabilities that are not always visible and that she may be able to influence people’s opinions in a positive way by setting an example of someone not allowing her illness to be a barrier to anything.

Somehow Anna finds the time to be Board member for the National Dance Company of Wales and to exercise her horse and Dalmatian.

Spectrum Internet has expertise to offer managed business Internet services (leased lines), specialist solutions for wind-farms AND residential services to those in ‘not-spot’ locations. In June this year Spectrum was crowned the UK Communications Provider of the Year by trade body Federation of Communications Services and was also one of the few selected finalists for the ISPA’s Best New ISP and Best Business Broadband category.”

Morgan Denton Jones Ltd

Having won the South Wales Business Awards start up of the year award in 2008, Morgan Denton Jones Limited are back this year nominated in the category Business Services Business of the year. The firm, based in Cardiff, specialises in employment law and training. It acts for a wide range of clients of all sizes and prides itself on providing the same high quality advice you would expect in a larger law firm but without the high price tag.

The team of 5 lawyers seek to give commercial, practical advice rather than telling you can’t do things or trying to frighten you about risks. They also challenge the traditional image of lawyers by being far more accessible, down to earth and colourful.

Spectrum Internet Ltd – See Above

Moss Technical Services

Moss Technical was formed in 1998 by Andy Moss, an Aircraft Electronics Technician in the RAF, whose dream was not only to own and develop his own electrical contracting business, but to build it on qualities bred from his time in the RAF -that of high standards, discipline, punctuality, reliability and appearance.

At the outset, the business was started with just a £200 investment in some tools and a small local advert, but very quickly grew, but not due to large investments in advertising, but by repeat work and referrals from satisfied customers. The qualities that the business was started with, were working!

Moss quickly earned recognition from the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB), the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contractors (NICEIC) and slightly later from Safe Contractor and the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS).

More recently, the company has won a contract to supply specialist Niko Home Control products to the UK and Cyprus and expects to grow turnover to £1.2 million within three years. The pledge to not install systems themselves, but to train and support other electricians to install the Niko products, gives them a unique selling point, and is borne from Andy’s belief that if you help others achieve their goals, you’ll achieve yours along the way. In essence, Moss Technical supply the products to trained, independent electricians, whilst advertising them on the niko.uk.com website, and in turn they buy the products through Moss…. A win-win situation.

Though this 13 year journey has been an interesting and exciting one, experiencing good and not so good times, it is rewarding that well over half of business, still comes from repeat customers and referrals. Basic customer service elements such as customer and training feedback forms as well as the integrity of knowing a job isn’t left until a customer is completely satisfied have been the key to Moss’s success… testament to the original qualities, still insisted on today.

Tender Loving Cleaning

Established in July 2010 Tender Loving Cleaning Ltd is a family run business operating within the Swansea area of South Wales, we provide cleaning services to a niche market in the healthcare sector. Having worked in the NHS for several years, within my role as a pharmacy advisor to GP practices I would often see the need for improvement in their cleanliness. To capitalise on this opportunity I decided to start a cleaning company and approached one of the local surgeries.  Armed with a Hoover, mop and cleaning equipment, I was given the opportunity to clean there, and two years later we are still there. We pride ourselves in maintaining high standards without compromising on costs; our main priority is the need of the client and to deliver a first class customer service, whilst establishing a working relationship.

As a local company we are often asked to support or advertise for local business, and have done so for the last two years. Currently we sponsor a local football team, which has seen them been able to buy their very first training kits. I have also been to France recently, having sponsored a local dance group, who had won a competition to dance in Euro-Disney. Our aim is to be able to support local business and employ local staff helping them get back into work.
